Political stability

After the Parliamentary elections in 2005, the then President Askar AKAYEV was overthrown during a popular uprising known as the Tulip or Pink Revolution led by current President BAKIYEV. The country has since then seen a series of protests and demonstrations. The July Presidential election however seems to have demonstrated that President Bakiev have successfully consolidated his power.

Disease outbreaks

H1N1: To date there are no confirmed cases of A/H1N1 in Kyrgyzstan.

Antrax: Antrax has been reported in southern Kyrgyzstan. Antrax is predominantly a livestock disease. Humans generally acquire the disease directly or indirectly from infected animals, or occupational exposure to infected or contaminated animal products. The disease is generally regarded as being non-contagious.

Congo-Crimea Hemmorhagic Fever (CCHF): Congo-Crimea Hemmorhagic Fever (CCHF) has been reported in Kyrgyzstan. Viral hemorrhagic fevers are animal and human illnesses caused by distinct families of RNA viruses. All types of VHF are characterized by fever and bleeding disorders and all can progress to high fever, shock and death in extreme cases. The disease is endemic in many countries in Africa, Europe and Asia including Central Asian Countries, in the past years, cases or outbreaks have been recorded in Kosovo, Albania, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey and Central Asia. Humans who become infected with CCHF acquire the virus from direct contact with blood or other infected tissues from livestock during this time, or they may become infected from a tick bite.
