Overview
Natural disasters seem to occur more frequently. There has been a greater increase in the number of reported natural disasters like drought, flood, earthquakes and the number of affected persons. The reasons for this dramatic increase are multifaceted, mainly the global environmental changes, environmental and ecological imbalance, increasing population density, rapid urbanization, deforestation and desertification.

Typically, the onset of a humanitarian emergency is characterized by confusion. Infrastructure may be destroyed or communication lines disrupted, hampering local response. Frequently, these events have called for humanitarian aid from the international community, an area in which the United Nations system has a specific mandate and plays a leading role, particularly in regard to mobilizing and coordinating international humanitarian aid. Effective coordination and information sharing between government, the United Nations and its partners are prerequisites to provide timely and reliable humanitarian aid to effected population.
